Musical origins: I started horn in 6th grade band. The band director was so desperate for horns that he offered the instrument free of rent. I thought my mom would like that.
How did you hear about TŌN? What inspired you to apply? I heard about it from my teachers. I liked their mission to make orchestral music more relatable and engaging for the general public.
Favorite piece to play: Anything by John Williams… I am a horn player, after all.
Favorite obscure piece: In Heaven by Miguel del Águila. It starts out as a relaxed and stylized Caribbean dance but ends as a wild, drunken party. What’s not to love?
Favorite composer fact: Liszt was so popular, he reportedly kept a dog to shear in order to keep up with fans’ demands for locks of his hair.
Favorite musical memory: Playing principal horn on Strauss’s Alpine Symphony in Disney Concert Hall. That ending with the organ is amazing!
Which composer would have had the best social media: W.A. Mozart would be the most active, but his accounts would have to be censored.
Favorite fact about your instrument: French horn is a misnomer – the instrument is actually German. Oh, and horn playing improves one’s kissing technique.
The thing most people don’t know about classical music is: Anything written after 1820 isn’t really considered classical
Favorite non-classical musician or band: The Beach Boys
Musical guilty pleasure: Hans Zimmer… and Taylor Swift
Best music to have on repeat: Any piece by Steve Reich – make a party game out of guessing when the track restarts.
What recording would you take to a deserted island: How to Survive on a Deserted Island audiobook by Tim O’Shei.
Proudest accomplishment: Being the favorite aunt of my three nieces and one nephew.
Favorite non-musical hobby or activity: Scuba Diving
Favorite book: Anything with good character development.
Favorite painting: Autumn Landscape by Agnes F. Northrop
Piece of advice for a young classical musician: Learn networking and entrepreneurial skills.
Time travel destination: 2050; I’d like to see how things turn out.
